Sintra – UNESCO Word Heritage Site

Departure from Lisboa Congress Centre to Sintra by bus. Sintra is a
charming village, classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The
Palacio da Pena is one of
the best examples of 19th-century Romantic revivalism
in Portugal. Situated at the top of the Monte da Pena, the palace was
built on the site of an old monastery belonging to the Order of St.
Jerome. It was the fruit of the imagination of Dom Fernando of Saxe
Coburg-Gotha, who married the queen Dona Maria II in 1836. After
falling in love with Sintra, he decided to buy the convent and the
surrounding land to build a summer palace for the royal family. The
interior of the palace is still decorated according to the tastes of
the kings and queens who lived there.
After the visit of the Palace there is some free time
to walk about in the village centre, an
extremely beautiful and romantic place. Be sure to also
taste the famous “Queijadas” a typical local pastry
specialty. Return to
Lisboa Congress Centre by bus.

National Palace of Queluz and Cascais

Departure from Lisboa Congress Centre to the Palácio Nacional de
Queluz, which is located about 12 km from Lisbon. The Palace is one
of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe and it
was conceived originally as a summer retreat for the royal family.
The entire palace and its wonderful gardens are steeped in remarkable
history and art of its time.
From there, the tour
continues to the fishing village of Cascais by bus.
Cascais enjoyed an important period of development in
the 14th century, when it was a major stopping off point for boats on
their way to Lisbon, turning it into a very busy port at that time.
Today, the pedestrianised streets and the city centre win you over
with their unique charm and atmosphere. After the visit of
the small historical centre of Cascais there will be
some free time to stroll the streets and enjoy the seaside as well.
Return to Lisboa Congress Centre by bus.
